It was early in the summer, sometime in the fall
He was looking for a lady or nothing at all
He looked up the alley, and he looked down the hall
Climbed up the iron staircase and over the wall

His face is half hidden by the worn window shade
With a look of dejection of a man over a maid
A black fly is buzzing trapped inside the pane
He pays it no mind and there’s no one to blame

Takes a cup of old coffee and drops to his knees
The carpet is filthy infested with fleas
TV plays too loudly in the apartment next door
Some Senator’s talking about the glories of war

He looks through the paper it’s got nothing to say
Just a letter to the editor about being gay
He looks through the paper and he throws it away
The cats in the litter, just another good day

On the street is a vendor, a jack of all trades
Marijuana, a pistol , some crack or cocaine
Green Audi rolls by, dropping its speed
Nervous indecision of a driver in need

The Butcher the Baker they’re all on the job
The thief he is looking for something to rob
The mechanic is greasy and the maid makes a bed
The mortician’s assistant is washing the dead

Some CEO’s counting, making cuts over wine
Thirty workers in Jersey just an old assembly line
The CEO’s counting the profits he made
Closes his eyes with a smile, just another good day

The Butcher the Baker they’re all on the job
The thief he is looking for something to rob
The mechanic is greasy and the maid makes a bed
The mortician’s assistant is washing the dead
Mortician’s assistant is washing the dead.
